New Line first dated the picture for Novemand then three weeks before it was set to open, they pushed it back one frame as a Thanksgiving holiday release. After its box office failure, Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny was swimming in red ink. In return, Black and Gass would receive 10% of all New Line’s profits once marketing expenses and budget costs were covered. To keep costs down on Jack Black’s passion project, he waived his $12M salary and split a $1M payday with his band partner Kyle Gass. As per New Line’s usual financing model, they sold off most of the international rights, which would limit their exposure to the budget. The budget for Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny was a modest $19 million, which New Line financed and the mini-major tapped into the Munich based tax shelter fund ALCAS for additional coin.
